THE LARAMIE PROJECT: 10 YEARS LATER CALLBACK SCHEDULE
Wednesday, March 30
Each person is asked to perform three different monologues - you are not necessarily being called back for these roles specifically - rather, we want to see how you can create three different and distinct characters. We are largely looking to see who has the ability to play multiple characters convincingly.
Remember that we are going for a very realistic/ documentary style of acting here. Remember that realistic does not necessarily mean slow. Also, we expect you to be mostly memorized for callbacks.
PLEASE NOTE, those called back for the two killers, Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. There are specific acting notes in the script that you should apply to the sides.
For Aaron McKinney: “Acting NoteL Please do not play Aaron as a sinister of brooding character. Aaron is a “regular guy” and the tension between what he says and his matter-of-face disposition is chilling.”
For Russell Henderson: “Be careful not to take on a brooding quality when playing Russell. The scene should play briskly.”
PLEASE CHECK IN 30 MINUTES BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED TIME.

Laramie Callback Information:
Thanks so much to everyone who came out to audition for THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER. Callbacks will be Wednesday, the 30th. THE STORY: On November 6, 1998, gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard left the Fireside Bar with Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. The following day he was discovered on a prairie at the edge of town, tied to a fence, brutally beaten, and close to death. Six days later Matthew Shepard died at Poudre Valley Hospital in Ft. Collins, Colorado. On November 14th, 1998, ten members of Tectonic Theatre Project traveled to Laramie, Wyoming and conducted interviews with the people of the town. Over the next year, the company returned to Laramie six times and conducted over 200 interviews. These texts became the basis for the playThe Laramie Project. Ten years later on September 12th, 2008, five members of Tectonic returned to Laramie to try to understand the long-term effect of the murder. They found a town wrestling with its legacy and its place in history. In addition to revisiting the folks whose words riveted us in the original play, this time around, the company also spoke with the two murderers, McKinney and Henderson, as well as Matthew's mother, Judy Shepard. THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER is a bold new work, which asks the question, "How does society write its own history?"

FROM MR. ROTH AND KERRY
THIS IS A LITTLE LONG, BUT PLEASE TAKE THE FIVE MINUTES TO READ IT! FROM MR. ROTH AND KERRY
As we head into auditions for our spring season, some of you might be wondering why we are choosing to produce THE LARAMIE PROJECT: TEN YEARS LATER, this spring. The show is a thought provoking follow up to THE LARAMIE PROJECT and addresses what has changed – and hasn’t – in the ten years since Matthew Shepard’s murder. We will be one of a very small group of high schools that have done both shows in the cycle.
To put it most simply, we choose to produce challenging plays because we have the means and the opportunity to do so. Theatre has the power to evoke thought and to bring about change. We are so privileged to live in a town that allows us to produce thought provoking work like THE LARAMIE PROJECT. Our audience members are intelligent, well read, and well traveled. They look to you, the next generation, to challenge them and make them think.
Staples has a long history of producing shows that other high schools shy away from – it is something that sets Players apart from other high school theatre programs. Not long ago, the Players that came before you fought to be able to produce works that dared the audience to think and to maybe even consider opinions that were not their own. In the 1960’s and 70’s, Players wrote their own pieces protesting war and performed them on Staples’ stage. In the early 1990’s, a group of students made national news fighting to produce “Falsettos”, a musical that will be revived on Broadway this year, that concerned love, homosexuality, Judaism and the then-recent AIDS crisis. A main character dies of AIDS – the piece could certainly be described as “sad”, but it was also IMPORTANT that people see it. And it was IMPORTANT that students produce it. All of the people involved still think of the show as one of the defining moments in their lives. Unfortunately, we rarely can say that about shows that are light and fluffy. Yes, we can remember them as being fun, but they won’t stick with us too long.
So, please try to remember that theatre has the power to change – thoughts, lives, points of view. And the shows you guys seem to love the most are all challenging, dramatic pieces that must be quite emotionally taxing to perform – HAMILTON, RENT, SPRING AWAKENING, etc. All of these shows were written by people who took huge risks do so – because they were passionate about telling these important stories. None of those have happy endings. All of them inspire us to think.
Please try to remember that we have the means and the opportunity to do this – therefore, we have the privilege to be able speak for people like Matthew Shepard, who can no longer speak for himself. As educators and theatre artists, it is our obligation to make theatre that will provoke thought and inspire change. Can you imagine telling Matthew Shepard that you won’t help tell his story because it’s "too sad"?
Mr. Roth and I are really looking forward to doing this show and continuing to challenge our audiences and ourselves. We have a great Players legacy to live up to!
